We are currently a Mayor-Council City. Many Islanders believe the City would serve us better if we changed to Council-Manager. Citizens from all political viewpoints and Mayor Kordonowy say the community should address and resolve the issue this year.
Under the law, 967 Bainbridge Island registered voters can petition the City Council to put this question to an all-island vote in the November general election. Given a valid petition the Council must put it on the ballot.
Bainbridge Island Institute was approached by a number of citizen groups and asked to act as a neutral petition campaign facilitator and administrator. BII has agreed to fill this role and engaged a municipal law attorney to draft legally compliant petition documents.
We intend to submit a signature qualified petition to the City Clerk in early April. This gives the Island more than six months to discuss the pros and cons. In November we vote. The matter will be settled.
